OpenAI Launches Dots: AI That Keeps Working Even When You’re Away.
OpenAI has introduced Dots, a new generation of persistent AI agents designed to do more than simply respond to prompts. Announced on September 29, Dots can continuously work toward goals, handle projects and interact with the tools and applications people already use.
Powered by GPT-6 Astra, each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser. It can connect with more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem, allowing it to work across services such as Slack and Microsoft Teams while maintaining context between conversations. Users can communicate with their Dot through text or voice in ChatGPT.
What can Dots do?
Unlike a traditional chatbot, a Dot can continue working without requiring the user to supervise every step. It can manage multiple projects, research information, analyze new data, prepare documents, develop and test software, update proposals and even turn interviews into content and social media drafts.
Dots can also proactively look for useful work to do in the background. During this proactive mode, connected applications are restricted to read-only access, preventing the agent from sending messages or modifying data without authorization. Users can inspect the Dot’s cloud computer, establish boundaries and require approval for sensitive actions.
The system also learns from feedback over time, gradually understanding the user’s goals, preferences and standards. OpenAI says users currently begin with one primary Dot, while future versions are expected to support multiple specialized agents working together.
How to get Dots.
Dots are currently rolling out to users on ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education and Healthcare workspaces can access the beta when enabled by an administrator.
Users can create their first Dot through the ChatGPT desktop application or desktop browser, connect supported apps and complete the initial setup. After that, the Dot can also be contacted through the ChatGPT mobile app.
The first Dot is included with eligible plans at no additional charge. Conversations with a Dot also do not count against normal ChatGPT usage limits, although tasks delegated to services such as Codex or ChatGPT Work still use their respective allowances.
How much does it cost?
ChatGPT Pro currently offers plans at US$100 and US$200 per month.
For companies, ChatGPT Business Premium costs US$100 per user per month when billed annually, or US$125 per user with monthly billing. Enterprise pricing is customized according to the organization.
Because Dots is included with these eligible subscriptions, there is currently no separate monthly fee for the first Dot.
A different kind of AI assistant.
Dots represents an important shift in how OpenAI imagines AI being used. Instead of opening a chatbot every time something needs to be done, users can have an AI agent that remains available, understands ongoing projects and continues working toward defined goals.
In other words, the next evolution of AI may not simply be an assistant that answers faster. It may be one that keeps working after the conversation ends.
